    Filipino American medical professionals face unique cultural, societal, and professional expectations that may create barriers to our emotional and physical well-being. This engaging workshop provides an overview of how indigenous Filipino values intersect with societal and professional expectations and how medical students and professionals can pivot in ways that honor their cultural upbringing while mitigating burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.

    Speaker: Joyce Rivera Javier, MD, MPH, MS, FAAP

    In this workshop, Dr. Javier will share the story behind the Filipino Family Health Initiative, a 15 year + initiative focused on promoting the emotional well being of Filipino/a/x  American youth. She will share lessons learned from using community-academic partnerships to implement the Incredible Years parenting program, a culturally-defined and evidence-based program that has resulted in decreased child anxiety and depression symptoms in Fil-Am youth ages 8-12 years old.

About the Speakers

  • Stacey Diane Arañez Litam, PhD, LPCCs, NCC, CCMHC

    Dr. Stacey Diane Arañez Litam (she/her/siya) is an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Cleveland State University, a licensed professional clinical counselor and supervisor, as well as a diplomate and clinical sexologist with the American Board of Sexology. She is a member of the Forbes Health Advisory Board and a mental health advisory council member with the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Minority Fellowship Program. Dr. Litam's speaking, research, and clinical areas of specialization include topics related to mental health and sexual wellbeing, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), as well as Asian American concerns. Her work has been featured in Forbes Health, Discover Magazine, National Public Radio (NPR), and in podcasts, documentaries, and news outlets. She has over 40 academic publications including 16 articles archived in the World Health Organization's literature database. Dr. Litam was among the first to study the impact of anti-Asian discrimination toward Filipinx American communities and her publications have been featured in the National Institutes of Health and the Asian American Journal of Psychology. She has facilitated hundreds of keynotes, workshops, and trainings for companies, universities, agencies, and associations and her work has resulted in a total of 15 national and 12 state/regional awards. She is an immigrant and identifies as a Chinese and Filipina American woman.

  • Joyce Rivera Javier, MD, MPH, MS, FAAP

    Dr. Javier is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.  She holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Pediatrics and Population and Public Health Sciences. She completed residency training in pediatrics and a postdoctoral fellowship in general academic pediatrics at Stanford University.  She is a physician scientist whose research has focused on decreasing mental health stigma and preventing suicide and depression among Filipino youth by using community-based participatory research to implement and evaluate evidence-based parenting interventions. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health KL2, K23, and R01 awards and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program.  She currently serves as an Executive Committee Member on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Community Pediatrics (COCP), Co-chair of the Society for Pediatric Research Advocacy Committee, and a member of Pediatric Policy Council. Dr. Javier’s honors include the AAP Local Hero Award, the Filipina Women’s Network 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the World Award, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Health Equity. More recently, she was nominated for “Alta- A Human Atlas of Los Angeles”, a project created by Marcus Lyon in association with the Getty Conservation Institute as part of the Pacific Standard Time initiative.
